Kitchen Plumbing FAQs
What Are the Most Common Kitchen Plumbing Problems?
Plumbing issues in your kitchen can be incredibly inconvenient and if they’re not fixed straight away they can lead to further problems. Here’s an overview of the most common kitchen plumbing problems and how you can avoid them:
Clogged drains. This is the most common kitchen plumbing problem. The best way to avoid clogged drains is to avoid putting grease, oil, fat, coffee grounds and fibrous vegetables down your sink.
Dripping faucet. The noise of a dripping tap can quickly become irritating, especially in open-plan spaces. A leaky faucet can also drive up your water bill. An experienced plumber will be able to sort this out quickly.
Leaking pipes. A leaky pipe under the sink can cause damage to any items stored there and can result in mould growth. It’s important to check these pipes for leaks regularly as they’re much easier to repair before the leak gets worse.
Low water pressure. If you notice that your kitchen tap doesn’t have the same pressure it used to have this could be caused by a problem with your aerator. It might need to be cleaned out to return your water pressure to normal levels. Alternatively, you should check that your sink’s water valve is turned on all the way. If the water pressure is a result of another problem, it’s best to consult a plumber who will be able to accurately diagnose and repair the issue.
Does a Plumber Need to Install a Tap?
Unless you’re highly knowledgeable about plumbing and have the required tools, installing a new tap is best left to a professional plumber. It will usually take a skilled plumber one to three hours to install new kitchen taps.
Should a Dishwasher Be Installed by a Plumber?
It’s strongly recommended that all dishwashers are installed by a qualified plumber. Installing a dishwasher requires specialist knowledge and attempting to install a dishwasher without the necessary tools, equipment and experience could lead to you damaging your brand-new dishwasher or even flooding your kitchen. Using an experienced plumber, like the ones at Warmshires, is the best way to ensure that your dishwasher is installed correctly and safely.
Do You Need a Plumber to Install a Washing Machine?
A plumber isn’t technically required to install a new washing machine, but it is strongly recommended. Installing a washing machine involves both electricity and water, so it's best left to a professional plumber. Trying to install a washing yourself could result in you damaging your brand-new machine or create problems later down the line. If you move a washing machine to a new location, an experienced plumber will definitely be required to handle the new plumbing work.
How to Stop a Dripping Tap in the Kitchen?
The first step will be to work out why your kitchen tap is dripping. The problem could be a loose seal, a worn-out washer, a damaged ceramic disc cartridge, general wear and tear or a more complex issue. If it’s an issue with your seal, you can simply replace it. Similarly, if you think it’s the ceramic disc cartridge that’s the issue you can try cleaning or replacing it.
However, if after inspecting your tap you’re not sure what the issue is or you think the whole tap might need replacing, it’s best to get help from a professional plumber.
How Do I Know if My Kitchen Drain Is Clogged?
Pouring oil and fat from greasing pans, coffee grounds and starchy food like pasta down your kitchen sink can result in a blocked drain pipe. There are several warning signs of a blocked kitchen drain, including:
Slow draining water
Standing water
Strange gurgling sounds when the sink drains
Unpleasant smells
How Do You Unblock a Kitchen Drain Pipe?
If you have a blocked kitchen sink, there are a couple of different methods you can use to unblock it:
Use a sink plunger. Fill your sink until it’s half full and position the plunger over the drain. Plunge up and down quickly to push the water down the sink. Remove the plunger to check if it’s worked. If not, repeat the process or try another method.
Use boiling water. For kitchen fat and grease blockages, boiling water can be a simple way to unblock your drain. Simply pour boiling water down the sink and check if the blockage has cleared.
Use bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. First of all, clear any standing water in the sink. Pour some bicarbonate of soda down your kitchen sink and then add a similar amount of vinegar. Put the plug in and let the mixture sit for at least 30 minutes. Remove the plug and flush the drain with hot water to see if you have successfully unblocked your sink.
Use a plumber’s snake. Purchase a specially designed wire called a plumber’s snake to insert into the drain pipe. Gently push the wire into the sinkhole. You’ll need to wiggle it around to get it past the U-bend. Pull, twist and push the wire to remove the blockage. Remove the wire and flush the sink with hot water to see if the clog has cleared.
Remove the blockage by hand. Most kitchen sink blockages occur in the u-bend of the drain pipe. If none of the above methods have worked you might need to physically remove the blockage. Place a bucket underneath the U-bend under the sink and unscrew the pipe. Water will drain out and then you’ll be able to access the blockage. Remove the blockage and clean the inside of the pipe with a cloth. Re-attach the u-bend and run the tap to make sure it's done up tight enough.
Call a plumber. If none of the above methods have worked or you don’t feel comfortable trying to tackle the blockage yourself, it’s best to rely on a professional. The team at Warmshires are experienced kitchen plumbers who will quickly be able to locate the blockage and remove it to get your kitchen sink operational as quickly as possible.
